Soulful Sunday – Gratitude

Do you remember, several years back, when author Sarah BanBreathnach came out with her bestselling book, “Simple Abundance?” Well, one of Ms. BanBreathnach’s suggestions was to keep a gratitude journal – a pretty notebook/journal where you can write down 5 things you’re grateful for everyday. I found this practice so uplifting that I have continued to do it every night. Concentrating on the positive things in your life puts you in a wonderful frame of mind and we all know that what we think about brings more of the same, so why not make it positive!

Your 5 things don’t have to be monumental events – they can be as simple as enjoying a sunny day, spending time with someone you love, or a job, though maybe not your dream job, that keeps food on the table and a roof over your head. You can choose to do it quickly or make a ritual of it – light a candle and pour a cup of tea or a glass wine and sit quietly and enjoy the process. Either way, it makes you feel good and takes your mind off any negative feelings you’ve been having. It’s just another way to take care of yourself, and take care of yourself you must because YOU are the most important person in your life!

    Love this post about journal writing/Gratitude. My daughter gave me a handmade (by her) journal of Christmas that I have yet to start making entries in. Maybe this is something I could incorporate into each day!!

    I’ve always written in a journal but I only started gratitude practice several years ago. It changed my life. It quieted my monkey mind enough to fall asleep easily. I had no idea how simple it would be to quiet that inner gremlin. I had struggled with that gremlin for years, decades actually. I had the tools all along (journal, pen) but never realized the power of writing gratitude. My husband bought me a very special pen while on a business trip to NYC. When I started gratitude practice, I made a point to find that pen. So that’s the special thing for me, every night writing in my journal, using the heavy wonderful pen. Along with writing my gratitude, I also do to-do lists and ta-da lists, the latter help me think of my small daily accomplishments as magical occurrences. You are right – this simple practice has brought abundance to my life. I need to make a new journal and your lovely post reminds to me to do this tonight. Thank you!

      Hi Manisha – I love that you have a special pen to do this with. I also like that you do a “ta-dah” list. It’s nice to remind ourselves of our accomplishments, whether big or small.

    I wrote recently about a similar idea, counting blessings on your fingers as a sort of meditation I suppose, it is a good way to look at life and appreciate things isn’t it. I am glad that it works for you. xx

    I’m absolutely beside you on this one, Susan. Its a joy to be joyful with gratitude. There have been days when i didn’t want to write my gratitude sunday post…but i did…and after i felt on top of the world again! Shifting our perspective to a positive frame does wonders, even when we Feel like there is nothing to find joy with, in that moment!!

      Hi Sita – Yes, it’s amazing how good we feel after writing down what we’re grateful for. It really shifts our focus, doesn’t it? Such a little thing to do for such good feeling results!

    I have been keeping a gratitude journal for several years now, it was given to me by a friend for my birthday. there were a few years where several people in my family were sick with cancer & lots of other “stresses” but I found that no matter what I never ever ran out of things to write in my journal everyday! This made me love the journal even more and now I give them as gifts when I feel someone needs to be reminded that there’s always something to be grateful for….sometimes it may be the smallest thing but you can always find something!

    I write my gratitude list daily in my journal. I usually include the quiet mornings, the coffee. The rest is whatever happened the day before. I’ve found when I focus on the positive I tend to have a wonderful day :)

    Funny how easy it is to say you don’t have time for something so easy and wonderful to start or end your day.

    I love it!… I have two journals, one for the blessings I find in everyday living and one I take to church and jot down things that leave an impression upon me so that I can re-visit them at a later time of contemplation.

    I love that book and keep it on my bed side table. I am making journals right now and think I shall also make one for myself , just for the gratitude. We all have so much to be thankful for but sometimes everyday things crowd out those things. It is good to find those things we are thankful for, especially in this turbulent world right now.

    HI Susan, glad I could share something with you and thank you for your lovely comment. I seem to be seeing lots of repeat messages around gratitude and taking time to say thank you for gifts in each day so need to work harder to take time to do this.       Oh, I’m so glad you stopped by! I hope you enjoy the mediations – they’re all good but some I have enjoyed more than others. There was one in the beginning on love that was so good it made me cry.
      Things like meditating and keeping a gratitude journal are what help keep us aligned to our authentic selves.

    Hi Susan..I devoured her book when it came out..I did keep a gratitude journal for a long time..then didn’t ..then started again..and have stopped again.
    I hope to start again soon.
    There is always something to be grateful for..the smallest of things..

    Being grateful is one of the easiest ways to change your thought patterns isn’t it….I try and be grateful each and everyday for the little things. I live with a chronic illness so I find this even more important as some days I might just be grateful to walk for 15 minutes or sit in the sun with a cup of tea watching my garden grow. Thanks for sharing xxx

    I love the act of writing down what you’re grateful for … I have a little wool covered jar that the whole family put notes into. We do it yearly and on New Years Eve it’s really lovely to go through them all. Today I’m grateful for discovering your blog ( the post with cheese bread and chutney – yum!!!) Emma x
